The semi-final was a hard fought battle that included a controversial red card and a sudden-death penalty shootout. Heavily favored HP was shocked with an early goal by Franco. The defense failed to communicate well with their keeper who watched helplessly as the ball floated over him and to Franco who tapped it in with his head.
Hampton Park would respond with a goal about 10 minutes later by James Stearns, who rocketed a shot from 18 yards out.
The beginning of the second half began with a red card awarded to Franco after he slid in for a late tackle. The call was certainly not a red card, it was late but only deserved a yellow card or less.
10 men down, GHS could only defend their half of the field with a tenacity that HP won't forget.
The game went to over-time which failed to produce goals, then came the sudden-death shootout.
Drew Custerd sent his shot to the right corner and Derek Ward could only watch with disappointment as it went in.
Then came Andrew Turner who sent his shot inches over the bar.
The loss was hard to bear, but the satisfaction at having held the state champs at bay with 10 men was the feeling that won the day.
GHS will now go on to face Easley Christian on Tuesday.
